Nicole's LASIK Story

Hi my name is Nicole Markowitz, I am the clinic director here at Aurora LASIK, but I am also one of our LASIK patients!

When did you start wearing glasses?
I started wearing glasses when I was really young, I was about 3 years old. I I remember the day I got them and I hated them. They were terrible, and as soon as could switch to contacts, at about 11, I switched, and I wore contacts until I had LASIK done last year.
Why didn’t you have LASIK sooner?
I actually always wanted to have LASIK done. When it first came out, I was all for it and I remember I actually even talked to my optometrist at that point and asked if I was a good candidate, and he told me no! He said that because I had astigmatism, LASIK wouldn’t be able to help me. That was quite a while ago, it was probably about 10 years ago when I was told that, and that kind of burst my little bubble where I thought, “Oh no, this sucks, I’m just going to have to stay in these contacts forever." Plus with astigmatism, my contacts never fit me quite right - I was always moving them around in my eye and struggling with them. I thought that it would be my life forever, until I started working for Dr. Rudd and he said, “Let me take a look, let me give you a second opinion. Technology has changed and we are able to help people who were told they weren’t candidates before.” I was so grateful to find out that I was a candidate for it!
Can you have LASIK if you have astigmatism?
Yeah, that is actually one of the rumors with LASIK. For people who have astigmatism, it is now so rare that LASIK can’t treat that. It is definitely just a rumor now, and we are able to help people who are nearsighted, farsighted, and who have astigmatism. They can still get awesome results, so a lot has changed. We offer a variety of services at Aurora. The great thing about that is if you come in the door, you’re wanting LASIK, and for some reason you are not a candidate for LASIK, we usually have another procedure that we can offer you. In addition to LASIK, we do PRK, we do Refractive Lens Exchange, Vision ICL... we have a variety of different services, which is great because it’s pretty rare that we actually have to tell somebody they aren’t a candidate for any type of correction.
How are your procedures custom?
Our procedures are custom because your eyes are custom! Everyones eyes are unique to you, and we want to pick the procedure that is going to be the safest for you and also get you the best results. Sometimes that doesn’t necessarily mean LASIK, that may mean another choice. Dr. Rudd is always going to recommend what is best for that person as an individual.
